Other Nearby Cross Country Ski Trails

Note: none of these trails are groomed with the exception of West Fork Road which is occasionally groomed by BRTA.

Silver Run, five miles up the West Fork of Rock Creek, is one of the most popular trails.  It has three loops – a 4K easy trail, a 7K intermediate and an 11K advanced.  Check either the forest service or Sylvan Peak for snow conditions before heading out!  These trails can be kinda rocky and stumpy when there isn’t a lot of the white stuff!

Parkside is south of Red Lodge on the Main Fork of Rock Creek, up the Beartooth Highway 11 miles.  It offers both 5K and 9K runs as well as access to mountain terrain in the wilderness area.  The trails are well-marked to make is easier to choose your route. As with downhill trails, colored circles mean easiest, squares are medium and diamonds are more difficult.

Lake Fork, also reached by driving south on Hwy 212, has both a 3K and 7K loop.  More experienced skiers may choose to venture off the loops and head up the Lake Fork Trail into the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness.  About 2 miles above the trailhead is Silver Falls, a peaceful trail with beautiful views.  This trail system has no snowmobile access, so it is very quiet!

Palisades Trail covers two miles of the Willow Creek valley, from Red Lodge Mountain Ski Area to Palisades Campground.  The beautiful Limestone Palisades of the Beartooth Mountains overlook the trail.

West Fork Road is barricaded at the girl scout camp as of Dec. 15th usually, which means that the road up to the trailhead (about 8 miles up) is great for skiing and snowshoeing.  It is a very easy, meandering road, and is very good for beginners!  This road is open to snowmobiles, as this is the common mode of transportation of folks into their cabins along the road.
